Its useful transmission range is from 1.8 micron to 17 micron. Due to wide transmission range and opaque in visible Ge is well suited for manufacturing of optical components for IR applications in lasers and optical systems. Its high index of refraction (greater than 4) makes it of particular interest for lens design. Germanium components are used with AR coatings because of high surface reflectivity of substrate. Germanium blocks UV and visible light as well as the infrared up to about 2µm. Its high index is desirable for the design of lenses. Germanium (Ge) infrared optical materials for the manufacture of quality thermal imaging systems. Diamond-like carbon coatings (DLC) Being applied to Germanium or Silicon windows and lenses DLC provides BBAR performance coupled with excellent protection of outer optical surfaces from negative influences of the environment (humidity, dust, atmospheric precipitations) and stays inert to mechanical strikes, thermal shock, acids, salts, solvents and other chemical reagents. It consists of carbon and hydrogen. Field of application is military devices and outside thermal cameras. Sometimes it's better to have window and lenses coated DLC+BBAR. DLC coatings can be applied to Ge and Si substrates of sizes as big as 320mm in diameter. Thermographic cameras detect radiation in the infrared range of the electromagnetic spectrum (roughly 9,000--14,000 nanometers or 9--14 µm) and produce images of that radiation, called thermograms. Since infrared radiation is emitted by all objects above absolute zero according to the black body radiation law, thermography makes it possible to see one's environment with or without visible illumination. The amount of radiation emitted by an object increases with temperature; therefore, thermography allows one to see variations in temperature. When viewed through a thermal imaging camera, warm objects stand out well against cooler backgrounds; humans and other warm-blooded animals become easily visible against the environment, day or night. As a result, thermography is particularly useful to military and other users of surveillance cameras. Specialized thermal imaging cameras use focal plane arrays (FPAs) that respond to longer wavelengths (mid- and long-wavelength infrared). The most common types are InSb, InGaAs, HgCdTe and QWIP FPA. The newest technologies use low-cost, uncooled microbolometers as FPA sensors. Their resolution is considerably lower than that of optical cameras, mostly 160x120 or 320x240 pixels, up to 640x512 for the most expensive models. Infrared (IR) light is electromagnetic radiation with longer wavelengths than those of visible light, extending from the nominal red edge of the visible spectrum at 700 nanometres (nm) to 1 mm. This range of wavelengths corresponds to a frequency range of approximately 430 THz down to 300 GHz,[1] and includes most of the thermal radiation emitted by objects near room temperature. Infrared light is emitted or absorbed by molecules when they change their rotational-vibrational movements. The existence of infrared radiation was first discovered in 1800 by astronomer William Herschel.- published: 10 Sep 2013

The middle-wave infrared (MWIR) and long-wave infrared (LWIR) are within the thermal infrared region. These radiations are emitted from warm objects such as the Earth's surface. They are used in satellite remote sensing for measurements of the earth's land and sea surface temperature. Thermal infrared remote sensing is also often used for detection of forest fires. Gas emission from industrial plants located near residential areas is a worldwide problem that affects public health in many ways. Airborne infrared remote sensing provides a valuable approach to characterize the extent of the gas plume, its direction, and how it spreads over an area of interest. This article describes the quantitative chemical imaging of carbon monoxide (CO) and carbonyl sulfide (OCS) gas emitted from an aluminum smelter plant, illustrating the versatility of this technique for environmental monitoring applications.
